The transport system in Macau city

Located at the eastern end of Taipa and neighbouring waters, Macau International airport is one active airport in Macau that serves the passengers traveling to this beautiful location. Once you reach the city you find that Macau has a well-established public transport network that connects Macau Peninsula, Cotai, Taipa Island and Coloane Island.

Buses
Buses are the major modes of public transport in Macau. The city and its districts are served by two companies namely Transportes Urbanos Macau (Transmac) and Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos de Macau (TCM). For many travelers these services might be quite difficult as drivers mostly speak Cantonese. They use very little English or Mandarin. You can however sometimes figure out the destination from Portuguese words given. While dealing with fare remember to give the exact fare or else you might not get the change.

Taxis
Traveling via taxi is quite affordable and convenient in Macau. Have your destination written in Chinese as most of the drivers speak Cantonese only. They often carry the list of tourist places and casinos list with them, so if you are stuck in between and face communication problem you can always refer to the list of places or casino.

Car

Considering the size of the territory, car rental is not a popular option in Macau. But if you want to go for car rental services then Avis provides you so in Macau. Whether you self-drive or take a driver, you will not face much problem as roads in Macau are generally well maintained with all the directional signs in Chinese and Portuguese languages.

Trishaw
While going sightseeing, you will also notice people riding the trishaw which is a combination of tricycle and rickshaw. Enjoy trishaw ride at Macau if you generally do not find it in many tourist locations.

Exploring Macau on foot
Walking on foot is the best way to explore a new place and Macau is no exception. Since the small and compact Macau Peninsula offers many things to discover, it is better if you can walk on feet. Moreover, most of the roads are one way so walking takes comparatively lesser time to reach your destination while road transport might take a long loop to reach a destination.

Though there are pedestrian sidewalks in most streets of Macau, you may have to fight to crowds that go in all the directions. Generally Macau traffic moves on the left but people do not adhere to the traffic rules. So before crossing a road, ensure to look both ways to avoid accidents. Since Macau is a hilly area, you should be prepared to struggle the up and down steep lanes of the city.

Don’t panic if you get lost at some old city streets as it is the actual fun in Macau. Pack your bags and plan a trip to Macau. Remember to book a good Macau hotel to have a comfortable stay in the city.
