Historical monuments, beautiful evenings, luxurious hotels and delicious cuisines – New Delhi in India is a place you must visit once in your life. The latest attraction of this historic city is now the Delhi Metro – the fastest, convenient and the most modern way to travel around Delhi.
Before the beginning of this century, very few people in New Delhi would have thought of traveling on an elevated track which is based on pillars above the ground. But the dream had come true in the form of Delhi Metro in 2002. Delhi Metro is a rapid transit system built and operated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) under the guidance of Dr. E. Sreedharan and his capable team.
Need of the mass rapid transit system in New Delhi
With more and more daily traveling to New delhi for work, Delhi traffic is always on continuous growth. Thus a survey based on traffic and travel characteristics was conducted in 1969 and the need to develop a mass rapid transit system in New Delhi was felt. However, physical work on that idea began in 1992 only after the extensive technical studies and search for financing the project and the problems faced in Kolkata project (Kolkata was first to have rapid transit system) were discussed. The Delhi Metro is the second underground rapid transit system in India and is a combination of elevated and underground lines.
Connecting whole city via Delhi Metro services
The idea to connect the whole Delhi and its nearby areas has been planned to develop in three different phases. The first line of Delhi Metro, Phase I began its operation on 24th December 2002. DMRC was proud to announce the on budget completion of its first phase (65.11 km of route length) in December 2005. And yes, the project was done almost three years ahead of schedule. Doesn’t it make a big achievement indeed? Kudos to Dr. E. Sreedharan and his team members!
The Phase II network with 128 km long route and 79 stations is expected to be completed in 2010. The Phase III (112 km) is planned to be ready by 2015 while Phase IV (108.5 km) is scheduled to be over by 2020. So once a walled city, New Delhi is all set to become the World City.
Though once it was an almost unthinkable thought, but today traveling in New Delhi by metro is a pleasure in itself. Delhi Metro is a revolution in the city transition as it has not only transformed the transit system but also the attitudes of the people on board. Thus a boon for Delhi people! Whatever mode of commuting you choose for traveling during your trip, make sure that you take a ride on Delhi Metro.
